DNA Project

In 2004 Vanessa Lynch and the Matthews family each lost a loved one through tragic and heartless murders. Following this, both families hunted for a way in which they could make a significant contribution towards the alleviation of crime in South Africa. It would have to be a solution that was both meaningful and achievable but one which would have a long term impact on combating the high crime rate within the country. The result - Support & Expand the Forensic Science Laboratorys DNA Criminal Intelligence Database in South Africa

In a similar light to the success of fingerprinting, DNA Profiling is now being used to trace offenders suspected of committing crimes. When used incisively, DNA profiling can achieve the following: Speedy identification of linked or serial crimes, earlier arrests of offenders, valuable intelligence, earlier exoneration of innocent suspects, and easier identification of bodies as well as deterrence.

The South African National DNA Criminal Intelligence Database (NDCID) is under the leadership and direction of the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and it is the hope and belief that both the Lynch and Matthews family, accompanied by the South African public, will be able to assist in the development and expansion of this facility .

Proceeds raised through specific DNA initiatives and projects organised by the Leigh Matthews Trust will be utilised to assist in equipping the FSL's in Pretoria and in Cape Town with technologically advanced DNA Profiling Systems. This equipment will not only assist in alleviating the extreme backlog of DNA samples awaiting processing and examination, but will also be responsible for the development of a "fast lane" through which urgent DNA profiles may be analysed.
