THOUSANDS EARN THEIR BLISTERS AND UNITE AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILD ABUSE

Close to 2500 individuals, groups and companies participated and endured ‘a little pain for a lot of gain’ in the 2008 1st for Women Jacaranda 94.2 Sisters with Blisters walk which took place on Saturday 22 November, at the Dimension Data Campus in Bryanston.

The event supports the 16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children campaign in the form of a protest walk.

Over R200 000 was raised and all proceeds went to the Leigh Matthews Trust and Women and Men Against Child Abuse, who were overwhelmed when they received their cheques.

The crowds were joined by well-known personalities including TV presenter Michael Mol and his daughter Rachael, singer Louis Carver, three singers from the a capella band Navi Redd, TV personality Kim Cloete as well as TV presenter and model, Cindy Nell who officially started the walk by ‘blowing the whistle on abuse’.

According to statistics, a child is abused every eight minutes and one in six women are abused. The Jacaranda 94.2 presenters also joined the walk to stand up and fight abuse. Sisters with Blisters is an event for people who have suffered abuse, those who know of someone who has suffered abuse and those who were prepared to stand up for those who have never broken the silence.

“By participating in this event, members of the Gauteng public united and made it clear that they would no longer tolerate abuse in any shape or form! They stood up to fight abuse, one step at a time, to ensure that their mothers, sisters, daughters and children are safe and unharmed,” says Robyn Farrell, managing director of 1st for Women Insurance Brokers.

“On behalf of Jacaranda 94.2, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Sisters with Blisters walk. Apart from highlighting our battle against domestic violence, rape, child abuse and violent crime in our country, this gives us an opportunity to make a stand and do something positive for our country. We often forget that there are women and children who suffer at the hand of criminals and we are in a position to do something constructive and valuable to make people aware of violence and to put an end to it,” says Alan Khan, CEO of Jacaranda 94.2.

Most of the participants walked in stilettos and there were prizes for the best dressed, best shoes and best corporate team. In addition, three participants won Jimmy Choo shopping sprees for two in Cape Town.

Through sheer dedication to the uplifting of our country and the love for all things pure and beautiful, Ludwig Taschner of Ludwig's Roses in Johannesburg has generously dedicated one of his roses to the memory of Leigh Matthews.

The Leigh Matthews Memorial Rose is a hybrid tea rose with classical urn shaped buds and beautiful, full and well shaped pink blooms attached to a long stem - perfect for the garden and for picking. This unique rose was launched at Gardenex March 2006, at the Northgate Dome, North Riding. It is available at garden centres and at Ludwig's Roses in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Not only is this gentle rose a symbol of hope and love, but the proceeds collected for the sale of each rose will go towards The Leigh Matthews Trust.

  • Leigh Matthews Golf Day 2006

The South African National DNA Criminal Intelligence Database (NDCID) is under the leadership and direction of the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and it is the hope and belief that both the Lynch and Matthews family, accompanied by the South African public, will be able to assist in the development and expansion of this facility .

The Leigh Matthews Trust decided to hold a Golf Day at Wanderers Country Club in order to raise proceeds which would go towards specific DNA initiatives and projects.

The day was a huge success and fun was had by all. A whopping R 150 000.00 was raised which has been utilised in equipping the FSLs in Pretoria and in Cape Town with technologically advanced DNA Profiling Systems.

This equipment will not only assist in alleviating the extreme backlog of DNA samples awaiting processing and examination, but will also be responsible for the development of a "fast lane" through which urgent DNA profiles may be analysed.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who made this day such a memorable day - without our sponsors and guest we would not have been able to achieve such an outstanding result.
